The station that saw the last train in 2017. by ludwigsdiana

The station that saw the last train in 2017.

It used to be a very special stopover for our luxury trains like the Blue Train and Rovos Rail, which is one of the most luxurious in the world.

I think covid put a stop to this kind of travel, and am not sure if it has resumed.

The trip in 2017 was a steam train from Cape Town to Matjiesfontein as a special birthday trip that someone had booked privately.
I think it has resumed. One - rail journey, I would give my safe seat at home for

Nice looking station

It’s in good condition for an unused station!

Such a shame if the train has stopped but a nice looking station.

Then that guy is going to have a long wait.

Still looks well looked after nicely captured Diana:)

Looks poignant and iconic. Covid put a lot of businesses on the back foot or out completely, I suspect history will not be kind to the policy of lockdowns.

Delightuful capture and composition. The guy sitting on the bench loos like he is holding a plant on his lap . I lovely way to travel in luxury. Pity the service hasn't started again.

Somebody is still looking hopeful! Lovely image

A very nice place to sit and wait for a train. Covid put an end to too many things. It's just sad.
March 5th, 2024
What a pity. It’s a lovely station.
March 5th, 2024
It looks very nice.
March 5th, 2024
It certainly looks well cared for and luckily hasn't become an eyesore.

Was the man playing the guitar? The photo shows so much! The lovely station, the mountains in the the background and the wires add such an interesting aspect.
I forgot to add the beautiful lantern lights.

I was thinking the same @joansmor Either he is just taking a rest or he’s waiting for the train. It’s a lovely shot and the station still looks in great shape

Traveling by train seems such a romantic way to travel. I’ve rarely done it myself.
March 5th, 2024
So different to over here, lovely station
March 5th, 2024
A wonderful station to visit. I hope you were able to take a train from here?
March 5th, 2024
Nice shot Diana. What do they do with your unused stations - a lot of ours end up as tourist attractions with week-end markets etc. or as community centres.
March 5th, 2024
Looks as though it is still looked after despite the lack of trains
March 5th, 2024
Ours has become a local museum - wish I'd been here (before 1965) when they still had train traffic
March 5th, 2024
Terrific leading lines
March 5th, 2024
This is so sad. This station looks so nice.
March 5th, 2024

March 6th, 2024

March 6th, 2024
Lovely capture.
March 6th, 2024
I would love to see a steam train come through
March 6th, 2024
What strong set of lines.
March 6th, 2024
@joansmor @grammyn He was a busker with a guitar, he was not playing while we were there. Many tourists walk around the station, so maybe he makes a buck or two :-)
March 6th, 2024
@robz A few of our unused stations are markets Rob. This one being part of a national monument which Matjiesfontein has become, will not be allowed to do it :-)
March 6th, 2024
It looks like a beautiful and well-kept station. Maybe the train will stop here again someday.
March 6th, 2024
Sad when railways shut down. We have slowly seen that happen in Canada
March 6th, 2024
A great pov to capture this station in the light and shadows! But it's sad if this is really the end. Fav
March 6th, 2024
Too bad- it sounds like it would be a nice way to travel and sight-see. Good shot.
March 7th, 2024

I so enjoy train travel holidays..
