HI HERMAN ! by markp

HI HERMAN !

I believe that this, is this Heron’s name. Given to him by the ladies who feed him fish regularly.
Unusually for a heron, he is extremely tame, and came within about six feet of me as I stood still.
No long lens needed for this, I just used my iPhone !!
Nice capture. I think the degree of tameness varies with the area where they live. Where I live, we have a few Great Blue Herons that show up around the local pond. They usually stand near the edge kind of camouflaged in the reeds and fish in the pond. People don’t try to feed them and they are quite wary of people and will move away if you get anywhere near them. I spent a lot of time trying to creep up on them to get good pictures, occasionally successfully but not always, and not without a lot of effort. Then I went to Florida on vacation and found Great Blues standing three or four feet away from people who were surf fishing, waiting till the fisherman made a catch and cleaned the fish, then they would dart in and pick up the offal. Even though I wasn’t fishing, I was able to just walk up within a few feet of them without seeming to worry them at all.

It depends or where their territory is and the surroundings. Most are leary of people and for their own benefit.

It is pretty cool when you can get close to birds because they aren't afraid of you. It doesn't happy in many places although I have had the experience a few times.
