I think. Perhaps @rhoing Thom can tell me for sure. Feeding on a sweet vernal grass stalk.
Just a few more days and it's time for No Mow May! Give the pollinators a feast on weeds, wild grasses and wildflowers. Please don't mow until June! Shoot the weeds, wild grasses, wildflowers and pollinators. Shoot for the whole month, once a week or more! The wildlife will thank you for it!
Wonderful close-up of this poor Painted Lady. We won't mow for a long time as we have a lot of Milkweed on our lot and we'll wait that the butterflies cannot feed on them.
@rhoing Oh my! I really can't tell if mine is American or Painted. I'm more inclined to say American after seeing both links, but I can't swear to it. Thanks, Thom!
@marlboromaam I think it *is* a Painted Lady. American Lady “forewing [has] a black apical patch, a small white spot in the orange field below the patch.” Your image does *not* have the white spot. See especially the third image in the slide show here: https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Vanessa-virginiensis
