Ripley, Ohio At Sunset by yogiw

Ripley, Ohio At Sunset

Today was a bittersweet day. My friend Ben called and invited me on a road trip to Carlisle, Kentucky. The trip was two-fold — 1) to take his two kitties to his Aunt Jan's who is giving them a good home since Ben is moving to Gloucester and 2) to donate three of the dolls I made in the late 80s to the Kentucky Doll and Toy Museum. One doll was my mom's and another my MIL's. The other I made for me. Fast forward 40 years and no one wants them. My niece thinks they are creepy and what am I gonna do with them? The museum said they would take them so off we went.

On the way home we stopped to watch the sunset on the Ohio River's riverfront in Ripley, Ohio. It was a beautiful evening. We walked up and down along the river exploring the quaint town. Turns out Ripley was instrumental with the Underground Railroad.

"Ripley, Ohio was not just a stop on the Underground Railroad; it was a hotbed of abolition activity. With help from his wife and children, the Reverend John Rankin, a Presbyterian Minister, abolitionist, and conductor on the Underground Railroad, secreted away over 2,000 slaves escaping to freedom. The Rankins chose the location of their home for its hilltop vantage point overlooking the Ohio River. A lantern in the window of their hilltop home signaled to men, women, and children that it was safe to cross, and that help could be found at the Rankin home."

So much history...I never knew! This will definitely make a great Wilde Adventure.
