Tom Sawyer Searching for a Sucker to Paint the Fence
I went to a Civil War reenactment event yesterday and was in absolute photographic heaven. People in costumes all over the place, candids galore, guns, smoke, action. It was like being permitted on a movie set. Amazing experience.
This was one of my favorites from the time...a young boy, waiting on the fence by me for the action to begin. Watching and waiting. He was dressed up, too, so he was a part of the event. In his straw hat on the fence, he made me think of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.
Such a happy day for me. And then I came home and did a really bad thing. Check that opposite selfie shot out @madhatters today.
This is perfect! I read "Confederates in the Attic" by Tony Horwitz, and it explains so much about the subculture of Civil War re-enactors--a really fascinating topic. There is an actual Western town movie set an hour north from where we live, and I hope to get there for photos soon too. This is inspiring to do so. We are spending most of our time in the southern part of the state these days, however.
Wonderful capture! Where was the event?
This picture and your title make me want to visit Hannibal, Missouri, where there is a lot of history about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. We were there once and I've always wanted to go back.
What a fabulous portrait shot, Amanda. The detail you captured is amazing, looks like I am standing there looking at him. This is one of your best to date. FAV
@jo13 I got one of him looking at me, too, but preferred the wistful look and light in his eyes here. Still wanna do portraits like you but perhaps need a better lens. What do you shoot yours with? A 50 mm?
@jo13 I had a guy on the street recently request I take his photo, but I was a distance away and turned and snapped...wish I had gotten more in there and in his face (he asked me after all), but it was what it was. The more I do that, the easier it will become I guess. Just love candid opportunities like this event and like walking around in a city gives you. I've got to get out more!
@swguevin So this one is better? Thanks, lady!! I went with this this morning and then looked again and liked the one where he busted me. Different things good about both though. Thanks so much!!
I've flicked back and forward between the two a few times and have decided on this one - largely because of the eyes. Love the expression on 'Tom's' face.
FAV! Love how you caught that thoughtful expression on this little cowboy. Great profile shot with the muted colors in the background. I bet his parents would love to have a copy of this wonderful photo.
