Monument to the dead alpine

The first world war was fought in part on these mountains where the soldiers died because of the wounds but also because of the terrible cold. Now in the Valle d'Ampezzo there is a monument where the remains of 5000 known and 4500 unknown alpines have been collected. I find this visit always very touching, one hundred years after the end of that insane war that stole the lives of so many young men

Poignant shot. The total number of military and civilian deaths being 20 million in the great war. Much pain and suffering all round.

A timely reminder and a great photo. The composition really speaks of the cold and suffering endured by too many.

All of what everyone has said above, but I think that you have also captured the loneliness, and stark reality of it too, fav

@mona65 @777margo @redandwhite @suzanne234 @ thank you for your comments. And yes @louisanoffke I was hoping to transmit the sense of loneliness and cold and desperation suffered in the trenches in the mountains above.
