CJ's taking pictures of two abstract works that caught our attention. He said that one looks like beautiful jellyfish floating about and the giant mural seems to be plastered with chewed bubblegum!
The art to the left is called "Why Then Opened II" by Sam Francis. He created it to depict the clarity of vision in his art after enduring the pain of tuberculosis.
The 50-foot piece to the right is called "Deep Blue" by Mark Bradford. What looks like bubblegum is actually large mounds of paint protruding from the surface, signifying the destruction in Los Angeles during the 1965 riots.
Wow, we would have never guessed that art favoring jellyfish and bubblegum would have such deep meaning. CJ says art is weird...yet fascinating in what it can mean to different people.
@domenicododaro - Hahaha it took a lot of patience for that one. CJ and I were both low to ground waiting and waiting for people to pass through. However, many people would see little CJ (if they actually notice his tiny self on the ground), be intrigued and give us the space we needed, which I thought was very nice.
WOW. CJ. Interesting lessons on art here. Thx for enlightening us. AS for what I see, I wouldn't have guessed the artists' statements if you hadn't explained them. I see ink drops in water for one, and digital network connections plotted out in the other. Ha! Not very artistic in my vision.
@cjphoto@domenicododaro -- wouldn't it be fun to go to the Board with CJ and Chris??? CJ is the only one I know who takes extra change of clothes along to match his art he photographs.
@domenicododaro@cjphoto -- greetings from LA! Does CJ ever go for field trips to LAX? Imagine his excitement in seeing such humongous airplanes as the ones out here . . . I'm just changing planes between China and home, getting ready to start leg 3 of the trip.
@jyokota - Thanks Junko! Love your take on what you see in the art, thanks for sharing. At least I can change CJ's pants in a museum in broad daylight and it's still modest. Hahaha.
LAX is not my favorite airport unfortunately. It's very confusing to navigate and public access to seeing the planes is tough. After they're done remodeling and restructuring hopefully it will be a much better. However, there are two locations in LA that are designed to watch airplanes coming into LAX, one of which gets you very close to them. Those are the spots CJ and I are definitely gonna try to visit!
Please have a safe journey home from China! Loving all your adventures there so far!
@cjphoto — thanks for the well wishes. I’m safely home now. And I’m looking forward to CJs airplane adventures. Although... didn’t he photograph an airplane before?
@jyokota - Excellent! Very happy it went safely. Yep he sure did, from our trip from New York, in the waiting area before our flight took off. He's also photographed little lego biplanes before haha
