"Teachers affect eternity -- they never know where their influence ends."

thirtydays_6: a picture of someone who inspires you

When I saw the topic for today's picture I wasn't sure at first of who I was going to take a picture of because as an adult I have found that I pretty much draw from my own inner strength to motivate myself. I haven't always been like that, but life's experiences have made me that way. Then I thought of Mrs. Tholen, my second grade teacher. She is the reason I am a teacher today. Ever since I walked into her room, I knew I wanted to be a teacher just like her. She has always been a major influnece in my life---way past 2nd grade. in fact, we stayed in touch for many years. She took me out to lunch when I graduated from high school and sent me a card when I graduated from college! Every year she inspires me without even knowing it. . Obviously, I couldn't take a picture of her today so I am using my 2nd grade class picture. It is the only picture since I started the project that wasn't taken on the day, but it was important to me to include a picture of her. I recently contacted Mrs. Tholen through email. She is now retired but teaching at a private school. I was happy to be able to let her know how she has inspired me over the years. I only hope I make a difference in my students' lives like she made a difference in mine.

*** can you spot me in the picture??? :) *****

What a fun "memory" photo!! I'm wondering if you are in the next to last row, second from the left? I've got a couple other guesses if that isn't right... :)

@jonna nooooo--everyone is guessing a boy!!!!! LOL must be hard to see since pics are small ( or do I look like a boy??? lol)

yes more teachers like you are needed. I had a couple decent ones but mostly mean ones, who didn't care. I was a pain though, and always had things going on at home, one teacher who kept me after with a detention once asked if I liked sports...well yea...well if you dont get your shit together your not going to be able to play sports, how fun will that be? your a smart kid, you can do better if you want to. and I did. and I still kept in touch with him, here and there because he made a difference in me, and made me realize I wasn't just a slacker.
anyways...I think your in Red on the left, back row:)

@dmrams No, you do NOT look like a boy!!! I think that these images are just a bit small... At least I hope my eyes aren't that bad, though they are getting worse quickly... :) How about fourth over from the left in the next to last row?!
December 7th, 2010
@hockechic so glad you had that ONE teacher that made a difference for you!! and no thats not me :)
December 7th, 2010
@jonna LOL soooooooooo close :)
December 7th, 2010
3rd from left 2nd to last row!!! lol
December 7th, 2010
@dmrams O.K. My last guess, and then I leave some fun for others... Fifth from the left, next to the last row?
December 7th, 2010

@dmrams So cute!!! What a doll!! I should have known that you would have had lighter hair...I was looking for brown!! On behalf of all citizens in this country, thanks for all you do for "your" kids!!!

Lol and yes Thank you...Teachers dont get paid nearly enough for all the hard work you do and all the young minds you teach and grow and mold into great minds!!!

This is a great memory and photo.. I had one teacher when I was in junior high,(and I already knew everything). That always kept my attention because she had a small lisp. Silly I know. And I am sure she never knew how much I paid attention to every detail. I wish there were more teachers like you and your teacher, and even mine who no fault of her own had a lisp that kept my total attention. And God bless you all for caring for our children.

Beautiful Retro Shot... Love it!!!

OMG, your teacher is so groovy looking! I guessed the wrong one (I see by the thread).

very nice
December 7th, 2010
My first guess was 2nd from left in red in back row but once you said that was incorrect I decided smack dab in the middle was you...so at least I got it on the 2nd guess...I think this was a great choice for today's photo and you did "take it" today if you took a photo of a photo I think that counts! So happy for all the children you teach as I know you are as dedicated to your profession as you are to your family...a very nice combination as our students sort of become a "family" of sorts to us over the course of a year, don't they?

Re - my shot...I didn't even have to set it up, I was just walking around the house last night trying to find something I could take a close-up of and spotted the red/green candy ...took a few photos of just that first and then decided to include a few more elements...funny how we end up with our photos sometimes.

Neat picture and great words for a former teacher. Sometimes you do not know how much they influence you until long after you are out of school.
December 7th, 2010
This is just perfect! I can tell we are close to the same age as I have a very similarly clad 2nd grade class photo!
December 7th, 2010
Amen--lovely.
December 7th, 2010
And which one are you?
December 7th, 2010
Amen to that, Della, re: the value of teachers! I've had my share of wonderful role models among 'em. What a wonderful photo, btw. Had to laugh at the early 70's fashions among you all...mini-skirts, granny dresses, bell-bottoms, striped pants, etc. Oh, how well I remember wearing all of the above. :-)
December 7th, 2010
@burns310 2nd row from the top--5th one from the left :)
December 7th, 2010
Wow, how fashions have changed!

It's a great photo, and I can say that I had two teachers that I never lost contact with until the day they died. They were top notch. We always enjoyed talking about the good old days, and they never lost interest in what I wanted to do.

haha! This brings back the memories! My school pictures look just like this! haha! Great idea to post this!
December 8th, 2010
I'm sure you are as good and inspiring a teacher as she was to you! Love this old picture!
