OK. so I'm breaking one of our Fisher Family rules for this project, by posting a shot more than seven days after it was taken, but I was quite pleased with this shot of the Arc de Triomphe, and it seemed a good way to end the series of shots of my visit to see Lucy.
Lucy and I took the Metro to the Arc de Triomphe and got there just after sunset. After a few shots there, we made our way to the Eiffel Tower, and then along the banks of the River Seine, past the Louvre and to Notre Dame, enabling us to get night shots of many well known landmarks.
The Arc is located on the right bank of the Seine at the centre of a configuration of twelve radiating avenues. It was commissioned in 1806 after the victory at Austerlitz by Emperor Napoleon at the peak of his fortunes.
Following its construction, the Arc de Triomphe became the rallying point of French troops parading after successful military campaigns and for the annual Bastille Day Military Parade. Famous victory marches around or under the Arc have included the Germans in 1871, the French in 1919, the Germans in 1940, and the French and Allies in 1944 and 1945. After the interment of the Unknown Soldier, however, all military parades since 1919 have avoided marching through the actual arch. The route taken is up to the arch and then around its side, out of respect for the tomb and its symbolism. Both Hitler in 1940 and de Gaulle in 1944 observed this custom.
Thank you all for your interest in the highlights of my visit to Paris. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time, and Lucy was a great host. I have many fond memories and a huge collection of photos from my visit!
I`ve only one rule and that`s there are no rules in this game. I seldom do a pic. taken and send the same day . Only beautiful pic.`s counts and this is one. Great night shot of a famous statue and interesting information to it.
