The Old Tannery, Bingley by fishers

The Old Tannery, Bingley

Built in 1890, these buildings are part of a large complex that was designed as a tannery. It is situated north of the canal and slightly up a hill.

Around 20 years ago the complex was converted to apartments, as have a number of mills in the town.

I love the contrast between the stone lower part of the building and the timber cladding of the upper part of the building.

It is interesting how the two levels are so different to each other.

Great perspective that shows off the building's architecture. So the upper-timber part of the building is original? Also, neat history as usual :).

in Maine, where my husband is from, there are many shoe factories that are no longer in business and they, too, are being converted into other uses such as apartments. it is good to see buildings being used instead of going to ruin. fantastic capture, really like the brightness, how cheerful it is. good thinking on their part.

Great shot of this beautiful building/factory. fav. I think we make it to romantic. Those day`s it was hard work on those places.

Love this as another example of the many re-purposed industrial buildings you've found.

Glad they just didn't pull it all down and replaced by new buildings. Love your shot.

Thank you all for your comments and favs on this shot, which put it on the trending and popular pages.

I've been able to discover very little about the history of this building, which is a shame, because it's an interesting site. It is nice to see it reused - in the past many such interesting buildings were demolished and new buildings replaced them, rather than converting and reusing places of such character. Perhaps we are living in more enlightened times? I would assume the upper part is original, although I can't find any old photos to prove that, but it is an interesting feature of the design.
