A really wet and unpleasant day outside, so I returned to my long term project to scan all the transparencies that I took between the late 1960's and 2006, and my DVD's shot yesterday brought me to this view.
6th August 1990, and we were staying at the Grand View Hotel in Douglas, Isle of Man. This is the view from our room window, with the sweep of Douglas Bay, the wide seaside promenade, lovely gardens, and in the middle of the road the horse tram tracks, with a tram stop right outside the front of our hotel. On the skyline some of the hills in the northern part of the island, which just call to be explored.
Good memories too of the many friendly and helpfull local people that we met while visiting.
A very good friend of ours came to Australia from the Isle of Man but he died last year of a brain tumour. David and I miss his company so much and I am sad that I am not able to show him this photo of his homeland.
From what I know the view has changed little until recently. Over the years some of the hotels have been demolished and replaced with either apartments or offices, but other things have stayed the same. Late last year major work began to refurbish the promenade, so it will be interesting to see the result of the work.
The clock tower on the left is still there, and was once where a cable tramway started it's run to Upper Douglas.
Much of the area shown here is built on land reclaimed from the sea in the late Victorian period. It's still possible to see parts of the original sea wall behind the hotels on the left of this shot.
@kjarn Thank you Kathy. It's a time consuming process scanning old photos, but well worth it - the process has brought back some great memories. There are still a lot for me to do though, so it's a long term project.
