South and east of the house and gardens at Wentworth Castle is a large area of parkland, part of which is where herds of Red Deer and Fallow Deer can be found.
In this shot a young Fallow Deer has just spotted me and my camera, and is carefully watching what I will do next.
Fallow deer are native to Asia and were introduced into the UK by the Normans around the 11th century. They subsequently escaped from deer parks and were intentionally released into hunting forests. Today, they are widespread, and the most common deer in England.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are all very much appreciated, and they put this shot on the Popular Page.
There were quite a few of these deer stood about 40 - 50 metres from the path. They must be quite used to people, since there is a well used parkland walk, with a leaflet available at the visitor centre. Even so I was surprised how calmly this young deer accepted my presence as I stood taking photos.
