Another rather attractive 'weed', these cheerful daisies are growing in my front lawn. The lawn has been a bit neglected recently, due to all the rain we have had. It has been rather too wet to cut.
Bellis perennis, the daisy, is a common European species of the family Asteraceae. To distinguish this species from other 'daisies' it is sometimes known as the common daisy, lawn daisy or English daisy.
It is native to western, central and northern Europe, including remote islands such as the Faroe Islands but has become widely naturalised in most temperate regions, including the Americas and Australasia.
Daisies generally bloom from early to midsummer, although when grown under ideal conditions, they have a very long flowering season and will even produce a few flowers in the middle of mild winters.
The name 'daisy' is considered a corruption of 'day's eye', because the whole head closes at night and opens in the morning.
Lovely close up. We get them here too, even if the weather is much hotter than other European countries. I had some in my garden, they started blooming early February and I removed them about a fortnight ago because they had become an eyesore.
Thank you all for your lovely commnts and favs, they are very much appreciated.
Sadly these daisies are no longer with us - Katharine found a dryish day and cut the lawn at the front of the house. However, we still have an excellent crop in the lawn at the rear of our house!
Love these "weeds"

Thank you. I think our back lawn now has more daisies than grass!
