The yarnbombing team in Thirsk have been busy again, so Katharine and I decided a trip was required. Unfortunately, we couldn't go on the same day due to various other commitments, so Katharine went last Thursday, and I went last Friday. The shots in this collage are ones that Katharine took.
This massive tree is outside Thirsk Hall. Thirsk Hall has been the home of the Bell Family for nearly 300 years. The Hall itself is a grade II* listed three-storey town house built in 1723 and extended in 1770 by York architect John Carr. The house is currently the home of Daisy & Bill.
The house is unique in its setting - to the east of the house it sits in the town of Thirsk and out the west door (to the rear) there are 20 acres of gardens, walled paddocks and a parkland - a complete contrast. The gardens now house a sculpture park, so that is another idea for a visit in 2022!
The Christmas tree is 18 feet (5.5 metres) tall. It consists of a metal frame which has to be moved into place with the aid of a crane, and the crocheting & knitting is then draped over it. It makes a very impressive feature in the front garden of Thirsk Hall.
Oh wow, how lovely! We were in Thirsk a couple of weeks ago and returned to the James Herriot house, which we love. Big tree in the market square, but not this display. Wonderful!
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, Katharine was thrilled by your responses.
The metal frame used for this tree has been used in Thirsk before, but I'm not sure how much of the knitting / crocheting is new for this year and how much reused from last year. I would think from it's good condition that a large proportion of the squares used are new for this Christmas.
