One of the smaller museums that Katharine and I visited as part of the York Residents Festival last weekend was the York Army Museum. One of the first exhibits is this rather splendid horse and rider sculpture. It's almost possible to imagine the rider charging towards the enemy guns. It must have been a terrifying experience for both rider and horse.
York has long had a strong military presence, and there are still two local bases - Imphal Barracks in the city and Strensall Camp to the north-east of the city.
York Army Museum is home to the collections of the Prince of Wales’s Own Regiment of Yorkshire and the Royal Dragoon Guards. One infantry, one cavalry, both are built on the histories of earlier regiments, spanning over 300 years of British military history. As a descendent of the Prince of Wales’s Own, the museum is also home to the collection of the modern Yorkshire Regiment.
I`m not a war fan or making hero`s of solders . And using horses ????. But sometimes you need them to get with of them. A nice comic of Calvin and Hobbes is one where he ask his father: ``How do solders solved world problems by killing each other ?`` . Good question.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
The museum gave an interesting insight into army life, something that I have no experience of. It is an alien world to me, and ideally we should not have a military at all. War brings death and destruction, and often doesn't solve the problem being fought over. Sadly we don't live in that ideal world.
