Jim Hickey by graemestevens

Jim Hickey

Jim Hickey is perhaps New Zealand's most loved Meteorologist and television Weather Man. He's a bit of a personality in his own right and has been presenting the weather on Television for nigh on 20 years now. He is always enthusiastic, cheerful and takes the time to mention the smaller, less often noted towns of the country. He is also a bastard.
I had a carefully planned weekend of industrious garden work planned (the Big Spring Clean Up), but instead Jim has seen fit to send us gale force winds, big seas, squally rain and plummeting temperatures.
This was taken at Back Beach, which is a West Coast beach (hence the black sand) and to get this shot I had to kneel on the sand to avoid being blown over to the East Coast, in which case you would have been looking at a shot of golden sands and vineyards.
This evening, as I sup on my hard "earned" wine I will be taking the time to write a strongly worded letter to Mr. Hickey to voice my displeasure.
Beautiful PHOTO!! :) I can hear the waves crashing and the wind blowing.
September 20th, 2014
fav! dang this is just so cool and atmospheric... give mr. Hickey what-for from me... frankly, it pisses the heckouta me to see so many folks who are only expected to be accurate 30% of the time... ;p
September 20th, 2014
@kt8ird Thanks very much - I narrowly avoided getting a wet tail doing this as well, and the salt spray was something else...so I hear I sit, sand blasted and confined to the great indoors!
@northy Thanks very much indeed - they obviously don't strive for excellence in their work!
September 20th, 2014
Jim Hickey....I knew I had heard that name somewhere! He's the chap doing the weather that always pulls his jacket together at the end....a habit that always makes me laugh when I see It!
Our weather people can't be relied on much either but would forgive them if I could get a picture like this! Stunningly dramatic!

September 20th, 2014
Stunning, Graeme. I just love that one wave crashing on the one rock out there. I love weather, to an extreme. Bucket list item is storm chasing a tornado. If I could do it over, I would be a meteorologist. I mean, come on my dog's name is Doppler.
September 20th, 2014
I give you a invaluable fav. I really like the pov here, as well as the crashing wave. Just so you know, it looks even better on the black. ;-)
September 20th, 2014
Awesome! Love the wave splash and the dramatic clouds.
September 20th, 2014
@happypat That's the very man! And thank you very much :)
@bigugly Thanks very much - I would have got closer to that island but down that end of the beach the waves were really crashing in. And I'd love to go storm chasing as well...
@bill_fe Thank you kindly good sir, and yes, it does look quite spiffing against the black ;)
@livvy Thanks very much indeed :)
September 20th, 2014
Love the subdued colors and clouds! Excellent shot!
September 20th, 2014
Fantastic shot, love the framing with the rocks and the crashing wave. You should know by now that meteorologists rarely get it right when we need them to.
September 20th, 2014
Wow. Beautiful shot, Graeme. Love the detail, the darkness and the waves crashing in the distance.
September 20th, 2014
@harbie Thanks very much :) Subdued colours seems to be what we're in for here today!
@ukandie1 I do know that, but they could at least make an effort! And thank you very much, always appreciated :)
@epcello Thanks very much - if it wasn't for the salt and sand spray and the clouds it would be quite bright....
September 20th, 2014
Hickey - nigh on - squally ( which I have just learned is a word as no red squiggly line ) - plummeting - oh what a wonderful word fest to accompany an equally wonderful image
NB - the West coast does bring you closer to us hahahahahahaha
September 20th, 2014
Beautiful, nevertheless! :)
September 20th, 2014
Poor Jim.. gets it in the neck every time... Wow you can see there is some force behind those waves.. pretty windy up here too... fav
September 20th, 2014
But what a beautiful atmosphere the weather provided! You have captured it so damn well!huge fav
September 20th, 2014
@mzzhope Thank you very much, always appreciated :)
@julzmaioro Thanks very much - it's still being forceful out there as I type...and yes, poor Jim :(
@juliedduncan Thank you very much :)
@annied I'm pleased you're enjoying the word-fest...and yes, it does bring me closer. Are you worried yet?
September 20th, 2014
The gateway..the shine...many things of nature's beauty...glad you braved it...beautiful pic..probably a magical place when it's nice....mr hickey!:) fav
September 20th, 2014
Really gorgeous shot! The foreground is amazing! You may want to address your note to Mother Nature... I'm pretty sure she's to blame! I'm also sure she could kick your weather man's A$$ any day ;)
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens oh no - not in the least - I have had to deal with much worse than you Mr S hahahahaha
September 20th, 2014
Beautiful scenery, nicely captured :-)
September 20th, 2014
Oh, I can feel the wind from here! I didn't realise that weather men got it right sometimes. We just listen, nod, and look out the window!
September 20th, 2014
Wonderful shot!
September 20th, 2014
Delightfully sinister and atmospheric weather, well done Mr Hickey! I just love those clouds rolling in, well captured, shame about the gardening :)
September 20th, 2014
I don't know, garden work or a stunning photo? Seems like you should be sending Mr. Hickey a thank you note. fav
September 20th, 2014
Love the mist. Beautiful shot!
September 20th, 2014
I feel for you on the nattering weatherman, but this is a gorgeous photo.... did you shoot in RAW??? If so, what a difference! What great details and color shadings - amazing. Now, I am nattering on, but inquiring minds are asking. :)
September 20th, 2014
Poor Mr Hickey - in everyone's good books if the weather's nice and in trouble if it isn't! Great shot.
September 20th, 2014
those rocks seem to be having an indepth conversation, I bet they weren't suckered in by Jim. There is always next weekend no?
September 20th, 2014
Wow...there's so much power here. Love it!
September 20th, 2014
Hysterical commentary! That Hickey weatherman guy sending you bad weather is just so thoughtless! Maybe he'll be contrite and send you beautiful weather to make up for it. Beautiful shot of back beach -- dramatic with the boulders.
September 20th, 2014
@nanderson It's a nice place in any weather to be honest, I'm just bitter and cynical...and thank you very much :)
@lisatown I'm pretty sure she could too...and thank you very much
@annied I have no doubt of that - someone mincing in wearing a corset should be no problem for you.
@shawnasays Thank you very much indeed :)
@888rachel Yes, we usually just look out the window too, it's so much more reliable...and thanks very much
@angeliekevl Thank you very much, appreciated :)
@hermann Thanks very much - I'm reasonably certain that the garden will still be there next weekend, just more over grown. I'm sure I saw a zebra in there last week...
@olivetreeann Thanks very much, but I've made my mind up...I shall complain again! ;)
@eyeamlisa Thanks very much indeed :)
@rosiekerr Thanks very much - I did shoot in RAW. It's made an incredible difference over the last few days.
@dide Don't feel sorry for him, he did it on purpose. Thanks very much as well.
@kali66 There is always next weekend and it's been nice to just sit around...and thanks very much
@aecasey Thank you very much indeed
@taffy Thank you very much, very much appreciated.
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens none at all hahahahaha - it would take me back to my uni days
September 20th, 2014
@annied Why am I not surprised? ;)
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens why I am not surprised you are not surprised
September 20th, 2014
way cool!
September 20th, 2014
Wow, the angry clouds are so wonderfully framed by those dark rocks! Wonderful feeling conveyed in this image for me!
September 20th, 2014
This is the NZ I remember!! Great shot love it
September 20th, 2014
Beautiful :o)
September 20th, 2014
Great clarity in this shot, I love the beach when the weather is wild, so much more interesting. Like your pov and composition too.
September 20th, 2014
@annied why am I not surprised that you're not super prised that I'm not surprised. This could go on all night.
@voiceprintz Thanks very much :)
@dibzgreasley Thanks very much - I'm slowly getting better at the photography lark
@777margo Thanks very much, just a typical day! ;)
@eilert Thank you very much
@adayinmallacoota I pretty much like the beach any time, but I agree with you, particularly when it's wild and windy, and thank you very much :)
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens until we can't type properly due to imbibing too much wine hahahahahaha
September 20th, 2014
@annied How did you know I was drinking ;)
September 20th, 2014
One word " Atmospheric"
September 20th, 2014
@archielogical One word - thanks ;)
Also, much appreciated ;)
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens because I am hahahaha
September 20th, 2014
@annied Stands to reason then. Bottle two is currently underway and we have a house full of teenagers. Hence bottle two, soon to be followed by three.
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens ah yes indeed - lol are they girl teenagers - they are the worst lol
September 20th, 2014
@annied Giggling abounds. They're currently singing along to Can Feel The Love Tonight from the Lion King. They'll probably all be dead by morning.
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens ah hahahahahaha - hide the knives - we do not want you not posting because you are in the lock-up - although .............
September 20th, 2014
@annied I could take photos in there....
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens exactly hahahahahaha
September 20th, 2014
@annied with a strained look on my face as my shapely self is molested by other inmates
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens it could be a very interesting but disturbing selfie ;-)
September 20th, 2014
@annied In the style of the human centipede,,,
September 20th, 2014
@annied they were meant to be full stops, not rampant commas
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens I think rampant commas are appropriate when you mention the human centipede - have not seen it as the trailer and synopsis were enough to make me throw up while having nightmares
September 20th, 2014
@annied Agreed and have no intention of ever seeing it
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens me either haha
September 20th, 2014
@annied We agree again. Sadness. ;)
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens there seems to be a lot of deliverancy type reality shows on on a Saturday night - that is disturbing hahaha
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens it is a worry this agreeing business
September 20th, 2014
Bet you are hoping Jim was flying his plane around in the cloud somewhere getting terribly air sick. Fab photo, much better to have your feet or is it knees in the sand than being in the air....
September 20th, 2014
What an absolute bastard. It was very inconsiderate of him to send you this weather. As well as a letter, if he does any outdoor weather crosses maybe you could drive past yelling obscenities as revenge.
September 20th, 2014
Lol you leave Jim out of this. He's the only reason I watch TV1 if he is doing the weather. Would have loved him as a teacher when I was at school.☔️☁️❄️☀️⛅️⚡️
September 20th, 2014
Oops 😍fav😍 by the way
September 20th, 2014
@deliad Thanks very much. Quite frankly Jim can go and land his plane elsewhere, I'm done.
@karlow75 That sounds like the perfect plan to me.
@andreajoy He is a bit of a legend :) Thanks very much.

@annied I detest reality TV. Drives me up the wall and makes me want to continuously vomit.
September 20th, 2014
@graemestevens I know the feeling - love me a good documentary though
September 20th, 2014
Awesome capture.
September 20th, 2014
Love the perspective, I first thought it was a B&W shot, but I spotted the blue piece of sky, fav !
September 20th, 2014
Just beautiful!
September 20th, 2014
I agree with @happypat the BBC news is rarely ever right. Given up ever listening or looking and am v old fashioned and open the curtains or front door and go from there. Can tell you are shooting RAW this is even better than the usual load of old fantastic skilled wonderful tosh you somehow amazingly daily deliver. I like it.
September 20th, 2014
a very accomplished shot. so zen.
September 20th, 2014
Great atmospheric shot.
September 20th, 2014
You sure captured the storm. I feel sorry for Jim! :)
September 20th, 2014
This is great, I love the framing
September 20th, 2014

September 24th, 2014
@gigiflower Excellent - pleased I got this one right for you ;)
September 24th, 2014
Is the weather ever forecast correctly anywhere in the world? Just the other night they forecast flood warnings and terrible thunderstorms for that evening and I thought oh my I won't get any sleep tonight. I slept like a baby if it rained I didn't hear it and it certainly didn't Thonda because I most certainly would've heard that. If you want a correct weather report just look outside your window. In the meantime I absolutely love this dock and stormy photograph you have produced. Definite fav!
September 25th, 2014
@janiskay Thank you very much indeed, and for the follow, much appreciated
