I would absolutely love to be able to say that I just happened to catch this as it flew by. It is a real De Havilland Vampire, the clouds are real and it is not a composite shot however it is just a static display outside the Ohakea Air Base and Museum...I've simply cloned out the "stand" that it's on.
I would have loved to have the plane further up in the frame of the shot but alas, even with standing on the car I couldn't get it any higher as some inconsiderate sod had decided to put a whacking great security fence in the way.
Deepest of deep sighs.
Many of you will no doubt be thinking "wait...New Zealand has an air force?" Yes, yes we do - in fact at last count we had two kites and a sling shot.
I am a confirmed and certifiable nutbar with a penchant for skulls, bones, blood, guts, fire and anything slightly peculiar and mostly bizarre. I also...
How about I send my kids over to help you build a trebuchet? This is an impressive shot... Do you have PS? You could recreate some sky below the plane pretty easily I think... ;p. I totally love the title, btw!
Excellent look to photo in the sky! Graeme, try making a copy and flipping the copy 180, and then blend/clone/content aware fill the merging of the two and just crop to fit without two planes. You'll probably get a nice looking sky below the Vampire. Just a thought! Cool looking just as-is!
@mikegifford Thanks very much - I'm not in possession of Photoshop so I've elected to just look at the bottom portion of the shot ;) @juliedduncan Thanks very much - who knew that Kiwi could actually fly? ;) @karlow75 Thanks very much - I may have to go back with some bolt cutters ;) @kevin365 I hate it when I inadvertently hit the fav button. It has been known to ruin an entire week... @northy I don't have Photoshop (which is why my fire shots are so much fun)...as for the trebuchet, yes please. @kwind Thank you very much :)
@graemestevens Those fire shots, without the use of Photoshop must be fun indeed. I suspect you must have an almost pathological degree of determination to pull them off...either that or you're just a lot smarter than I.
@gamelee Thank you very much :) @swillinbillyflynn I almost fooled myself ;) @maggiemae true, how remiss of me. And I only got above that fence by standing on the car...ooops @gardencat The out takes are hilarious and fraught with danger.
Easy to extend the canvas in PS Graeme, just google for instructions. In terms of regional defence we can add a couple of row-boats and a pop-gun or two. Oh, and our problem-prone Collins-class subs. You must feel much safer now. BTW as a certified aircraft nut in my earlier days I was very excited to see a Vampire again.
@ltodd I've got millions yet - they're quite cheap @tracie8266 Thank you very much :) @blueberry1222 Totally thank-o ;) @golftragic One problem - I don't have PS. I find working without it makes the flame shots more challenging....and yes, I released my "inner nerd" as well ;) @kerosene Thank you very much - our air force is something to behold... @rosiekerr Yeah, we growl at everyone... ;)
This took me back 65 years - I remember these flying in groups of three at about 200' above our house... the second jet fighter plane on active service. Now if you can also find a Meteor, I shall probably die of nostalgia.
A friend joined the Irish Navy ( 3 grey tugs) as they seldom left port they used to joke " join the Irish Navy , fall overboard, get stung by nettles" . I was thinking we could declare war on you , we'll bring the drink if ye look after the food..superbly executed shot...
@theboxmanreturns The only possible explanation that I have is that they may want to invade because we have Whittakers chocolate @vetsky Thanks very much :) @sketch2 Who's going to argue with 2 kites and slingshot though? ;) @jack4john That works for me - and thank you very much @kategoring Thanks very much :) @paul10 Thank you kindly :) @domenicododaro Thank you very much :) @vignouse Finding a meter may be a little bit trickier but I'll see what I can do ;)
Superb shot, I saw 2 vampires at the Warbirds over Wanaka, and they were impressive. Isn't Ohakea where they are going to celebrate next year? 50 years of airforce?
@888rachel Oooh, I hope so - I remember going to several air shows there as a wee lad. @yrhenwr We're a threatening bunch ;) @nicoleterheide Thank you very much :)
@juliedduncan Thanks very much - who knew that Kiwi could actually fly? ;)
