The Scourging At The Pillar

Ang Paghahagupit sa Haliging Bato (The Scourging At The Pillar)

Crafted by an unknow scupltor in 1930's, this image depicting the scene of Jesus' torture under the arms of the Roman prison guards, is one of the few remaining images that joined the Good Friday Procession during the pre-war period. It is made up of 3 statues - one Jesus tied to the stone pillar and the two torturers - all made of baticulin wood.

Locally known as "Hagupit", this image never fails to evoke strong emotions from those who view it - pity and compassion for Jesus and fear of the prison guards whose faces depict intense cruelty.
