Today I wanted to go to the Nisqually Refuge to take pics of birds but the weather didn't co-operate. Instead we drove down to Centralia - about 1 1/2 hours away - this town has an interesting history. It used to be a bustling railroad town - but now it's got a lot of antique shops and little else. Lovely little rail station with wonderful brickwork and wooden benches inside. Lots of wonderful older buildings, and but parts of the town are in terrible decline. I do hope they can make it - the buildings are old for this area - mostly built in the early 1900's. I wouldn't have felt very safe around the railroad station if my hubby hadn't been with me. More pics to follow in the next few days.
Wonderful capture, Jan. You show off the run down feel very well. I hope they are able to make something of the area too. It is always an uphill battle it seems.
@sansjuan@mamamia - Thanks Nita and Joanne. The buildings are wonderful - almost everyone was an antique store on the main floor level.
I think most visitors flock to the outlet shops just outside of town.
You really capture the mood of an aging town -- the wires are so complicated back when nothing was buried, no such thing as cables. This will be interesting to follow.
My maternal great grandmother lived there, and ran a small cafe. I have many of her diaries from the 40s-60s, I wonder how many of the places are still there. Many of her relatives still live in the surrounding area. Great capture!
@nanderson - Thanks Nancy. The buildings are awesome! I would love to see this town blossom - there is so much to love. A bakery would be nice, a good sandwich shop, maybe......
@dakotaburns - Thanks Donald. Yes - everyone wants to go to Wal-Mart and the small businesses close. So sad. @cathieg - Thanks Cathie! We are going to do some more exploring down there when the weather is better. @rhos@paulaw@gizathecat - thanks so much - so many photo-ops in this town but it was raining and I decided not to get my camera wet - but we will go back for more. @taffy - Thanks Taffy - I was amazed at all the wires and cables criss-crossing! @nanalisarocks - Oh Lisa - those would be so wonderful to have- that's a real treasure. I think in that era it was a bustling town. We were excited to go through Tenino near by and see a railroad museum (closed when we were there) and a nice park - so efforts are being made.
