Il Vecchio Castello by jaybutterfield

Il Vecchio Castello

I originally misidentified this as the Getty Villa in Pacific Palisades. Thank you @gardenfolk for noting this.

Villa (de) Leon, the Italianate palace that towers above Pacific Coast Highway, was commissioned by Austrian native Leon Kauffman, but who enjoyed only a few scant years before he died. Kauffman made good on a promise he made to his wife, Clemence, that if he ever had the money he would build her a dream castle by the sea. The businessman and industrial magnate had made a fortune in the wool processing business during the First World War and was able to nurture his opulent taste for antiquities of all kinds. It is now privately held but I enjoy driving by it everyday.
What a wonderful daily gift. I've got to make plans to visit both sites. The capture of the fog adds to the majesty of the villa.

Hello Jay. I was born and raised in Pacific Palisades and this was not the original J. Paul Getty Museum. It is located north of this mansion and tucked into the mountain and does not have a view of the ocean. This property photographed was known as the Villa de Leon, commissioned by Austrian native Leon Kauffman. The son of Leon, Pat Kauffman and his wife were friends of my parents.

I thought you would like to know what you are really passing by each day. This mistake is made all the time. :)

Thank you @gardenfolk -- I didn't realize this -- it has been about 30 years since I have actually been to the Getty Villa and make this mistake of confusing this this villa with that. I have amended my comments.
