The Ouse and Rowntree water polo park

The river Ouse in York has been growing, shrinking and growing over the last couple of weeks but defences have held. Rowntree Park becomes a water polo park at least once a year. Here it is behind the inconvenient tree. Paono view from the Millennium bridge looking towards the city
Goodness, that really IS wet!!

You have had it worse than we have, so glad the defences have protected York. Some people don't realise allowing open spaces like this to flood are all part of the water management. In Nottingham when Wilford rugby field flooded, people some people thought it should have been protected.

@oldjosh sadly our council has granted permission for an ancient meadow SSSI flood plain to be trashed to build a flood defence. Nature provides flood defences, man ‘improves’ them. The water will go where it wants taking the line of least resistance.

@casablanca we have had worse but this is bad enough. The anticipated peak overnight might test the defences but hopefully all will be ok

This is what a flood plain is supposed to do!

@lostphojo except “technically” this isn’t. The photo overlooks the park which has a lake where the outdoor swimming pool used to be. Now the whole park is under water. There are paths both sides of the river deep under water. The playing field on the south bank is under water but on my side, slightly higher, it’s still just very muddy from the rain. Not flooded - this time. But I agree, flood plains, natural or made made as an incidental are essential, we build on or drain them at our peril.
