I was over at Doug Cartwright's place on Monday. After helping him design a blog for another artist who is visiting from interstate, he let me work in his lead-lighting studio and produce a small jewelery box.
This one is of my own colour design; but his template.
Writer, poet, artist and prolific reader.... that's me.
I'm a collector of books, vinyls, coin purses and strange handbags... that's me too.
Otherwise, I love...
It took me a good part of the afternoon to sort out the glass, then wrap the foil around the opaque pieces, then the foil around the clear pieces (there's two different types for each), and then there was the flux and then the tacking with metal.
The bronzed look was made with copper sulfate, a wash in cold soapy water then polished, then we had to work on it again with the sides... very time-consuming. But fun.
I can see why Doug loves his work. He does other bigger things too. If you've seen the new Narnia film (the one with the ship in it), you would have seen his work in the Captain's cabin and the doors of that ship.
@ Michelle: Thank you. Doug kept on tossing glass in my direction on the workbench until I got the right colours and shapes. Then, I had to use the water-operated, electric grinder to make sure the sharp corners were softened.
Even though it's time-consuming, this kind of art is so much fun!
However, when I got home to Little Miss Stevie, I raced straight past her and jumped in the shower as I had tiny pieces of glass all over my hair, in my clothes and on my hands that I didn't want her to eat.
