Hoverfly Larvae by natsnell

Hoverfly Larvae

About a month ago we filled a small tray with water and left it in the undergrowth at the bottom of the garden. A few days ago I noticed there were now quite a few small creatures swimming about in it.

Captured here is a Hoverfly Larvae or Rat-tailed Maggot. Their long telescopic tails link up to the surface of the water and acts as a snorkel. Look carefully and you should see another few tails connected to the surface of the water.

Here is a link to a snap I took a few months back of a Hoverfly in our garden, I wonder if they are the same species? http://365project.org/natsnell/365/2011-04-09

I found this quite hard to photograph. I battled against poor light, reflection from the surface of the water and focusing on the subject below. They are also wriggly little things.
What an interesting creature. Nice project!

Great picture and narrative, we learn so much from 365!

Fascinating shot and caption. The detail of the larva at this size is clear but I viewed the shot large as well out of interest.

great project - always amazes me that things just appear in water if you leave it out! great shot!

I'm intrigued and repulsed at the same time. Did you set out to grow him?
