First discovery of the red ear fungus in the Netherlands
Dutch Mycological Society
10-SEP-2014 - The photogenic Red Ear Fungus was first found in the Netherlands on August 28 in the Hulkesteinse Bos in Flevoland. Only six days later, on September 3, he was also found near the -------Poelbos near Goes. ------Two finds of a new species in close succession are extremely rare. The red ear fungus is only found worldwide in Europe and North America, but is rare there everywhere.

Dutch name
The Red Ear Fungus does not yet have an official Dutch name. Because the species was also found a few times in Belgium in the past and was noted under the name “Red ear fungus”, this name is also used, subject to change, for the two new Dutch finds. Despite its modest size of a maximum of a few centimeters, the Red Ear Fungus is an unmissable species. The scientific species name cinnabarinus refers to the color “vermilion red” or simply “vermilion”. Vermilion is a red-orange pigment. It consists of mercury(II) sulphide and is found in nature as the mineral cinnabar. There are more mushrooms that derive their Dutch name from this color, such as the Vermiljoenhoutzam ( Pycnoporus cinnabarinus ) and the Vermilion curtain fungus ( Pycnoporus cinnabarinus ).Cortinarius cinnabarinus ). The name Vermiljoenoorzwammetje would therefore be more obvious. For the time being, we have to wait for the official Dutch name. The name is determined by the Dutch Names Committee (CNN) of the Dutch Mycological Association.
Very interesting info. Thanks for taking the time to copy of all that information.
