My get pushed challenge this week from Marta states "you've got an amazing selection of nature shots at sunset. How about you venture out to capture something man-made and portray it in a different light situation?" So, when I stopped at Kiptopeke to look for pelicans on my way home from the grandbabies this past weekend, I noticed that the light was playing on the concrete ships in just such a way. It was not quite sunset - just the beginning of the golden hour. And a little post processing goes a long way!
These concrete ships, truly made of concrete, were built during WWII when there was a shortage of steel and used to transport military supplies as well as serve as floating storage spaces. In 1949, sometime after the ships were retired from service, 9 ships were partially sunk in two rows parallel to the Chesapeake Bay side of this peninsula to create a breakwater for the ferry that transported vehicles and people and whatnot before the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel was built. At one time, a ferry director used the ships for a private drinks and poker club, and there's rumor that doors from the interior of the ships found new homes in local houses. It's now a hotspot for fishing, sea birds have made this a home and haven, and it has created a very peaceful beach for this state park.
@whimsicalgrateful Thanks Marta!! I did something in Color Efex, but I can't remember what. No oil painting mask as such, but there was a preset that really added, and even changed the coloring somewhat - REALLY brought out the glow!
I'm so glad you like it! It's not at all the one I thought I'd post! I have another idea, but it will be Sunday evening before I have the chance to get it, so even if I DO actually find it, it probably won't be up within the deadline time, but I'll post it anyway. We'll just have to see!
