Not the best shot, but what a huge woodpecker! He was going at a hole in this dead pine tree. I'm going to keep after this guy until I get a good shot. Thanks for checking him out!
I LOVE seeing these things! They are huge! Hard to catch though, because they stay so high in trees...at the lake, on the corp property walk out to the point....the path is on a high ridge, with a valley next to it, so I can see these birds a bit more level...but still ...so hard to get a good pic! GOod luck on your quest!
@espyetta Yes, he was very high up and as you can tell, I had a very small opening to catch him. I'm sure that he'll be returning to this hole, so I plan to be ready!
@tara11 Look at his claw/toenail! Wow. These pileated woodpeckers (I think that is what it is) is so amazing. I saw one with a Red headed wood pecker last winter...the red headed was tiny.
wonderful capture of this pileated woodpecker, as Mary Beth here mentioned, thought for a minuite it might be the ivory bill woodpecker, but while they look nearly the same the ivory bill is nearly the same size with a wide white strip up his back and with an ivory white bill, they are very very rare, thought to be extinct, there has only been one or two spotted in the swamps of Lousiana in the last 7 or 8 years...great find and outstanding capture with such great detail even to the claw!!!.........
@pyrrhula Thanks Pyrrhula! @turning_40 Thanks Janelle, our house backs up to woods so there's lots of wildlife around here. @swilde@kerristephens Thanks you both for stopping by and for your kind comments.
@tonyjsisti Thanks Tony. I was out with my son walking our neighbors dog Charlie and kept hearing this guy pecking away. I took me about 15 minutes to finally find him and I was only able to get a few shots, but was pleased that I had one that was fairly clear. Yes, you and MaryBeth are correct - Pileated Woodpecker.
@sunnygreenwood Hi Anne! Isn't that claw huge? I went out several times today trying to listen for him but no luck. I'm hoping I didn't scare him away!
@maggie2@olivetreeann Thanks ladies. I was probably able to get a shot because he was so high and I might have been camoflaged by other trees. I hope he comes back. Half the mystery the other day was finding which tree he was on.
@alwyn255 He was a very nice find. I haven't seen him since though even though I think I hear him pecking. @aromatic Thanks so much for the fav Jane! @lisjam1 Thanks Lisa - I was excited when I saw him!
