These flamboyant Monarch Butterflies have been teasing me for the past few days flitting through the milkweed while we worked to solve our wild pig problem. Today I went armed with my camera and caught this one being pointed out by two black speargrass seed heads. Black speargrass is a native grass of North Queensland and has a sharp little barbed seed with a long awn or tail designed to drive the seed into the soil as it dries. However it works equally well on the furry coats of animals like sheep - even some dogs and cats. It also likes clothes especially socks and is a real nuisance when you're working outside and a sharp little barb starts trying to twirl its way into your skin!
Beautiful shot Margaret, the patterns on the wings look like stained glass. how awful to have the barbs trying to enter your skin. hope you solve your pig problem soon.
@http365proj Thanks Shirley for your lovely comments. Always appreciated, So far so good with the pigs. Finished erecting an electric fence yesterday and none got in last night. Let's hope it stays that way.
