Australia Day Celebrations

At the suggestion of Jane Anderson may I explain...
a stubbie is a smaller, shorter bottle of beer than a standard bottle. It hold 375mL.
A thong is basic Aussie footwear - simply a sole, usually rubber with a y shaped strap that is fitted between the first and second toe. The arms of the Y are anchored toward the heel of the sole. You wear them anywhere and everywhere. They were sold all decorated up for Australia day.
Esky - a portable cooler used to keep your stubies cold. Good luck to any wife who wishes to fit her cold desserts in the esky to keep cool for the party. Beer comes first!
Ute... well I think an American would call it a pick up. It's a car with a tray back. Everything and anything gets carted in the trusty ute, hay, chickens, logs, dogs. If it can fit I'm sure its been carted in a ute.
Here is our Aussie version of Jingle Bells using all these words in context. Kelpie by the way is a dog...our Australian bred cattle dog and boot is the tray of the ute. Got it? Now lets all sing to the tune of Jingle Bells..Let's hear it loud and clear. It will warm the cockles of your hearts.

Dashing through the bush
In a rusty Holden Ute
Kicking up the dust
Esky in the boot
Kelpie by my side
Singing Christmas songs
It's Summer time and I am in
My singlet, shorts and thongs

Oh! Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells
Jingle all the way
Christmas in Australia
On a scorching summer's day
Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells
Christmas time is beaut
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a rusty Holden Ute.
Very festive! Now you'll have to explain the words . . .

Wonderful version of Jingke Bells Margaret. I knew the meaning of all the words except Esky, I had no idea what that was!

well of course to explain you would just say - pack the esky with stubbies, throw it in the ute, and all you need are thongs on your feet to stomp out an aussie party!

Do you know the book, "Australia A to Z" by Armin Greder? It's a picture book that identifies various terms that you describe above!

@jyokota No I don't. Thanks for the information. I'll have to try to track it down. The words are so familiar to us I was surprised for the need to explain them.

@farmreporter It was a great day Wendy. Our community has a tradition to make the day progressive. One little town puts on breakfast ; (this was their cake); we move onto the next town for lunch and then our little village hosts dinner ( a traditional aussie meal of corned beef and boiled veges with white sauce and lamingtons for dessert). . It is all good fun.
