A ravenous destroyer of towns by vikdaddy

A ravenous destroyer of towns

Like every morning, I was listening to BBC Radio 4 on the way to work. During this morning's broadcast, I was made aware that Mark Twain did not want his autobiography to be published until 100 years after his death, and 2010 is the centenary of his passing. Mark Twain is probably best known for his book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, but I remember him from my childhood, in particular from a little known, creepy and largely forgotten claymation called The Adventures of Mark Twain.

I was subsequently interested, and I did a bit of Internet searching about his legacy and came across an interesting quote about his dislike of trains and rail-roads: "A railroad is like a lie - you have to keep building to it to make it stand. A railroad is a ravenous destroyer of towns, unless those towns are put at the end of it and a sea beyond, so that you can't go further and find another terminus."

I thought the quote is particularly apt when applied to today's actual roads - especially motorways. The quote also made me think about those disused and abandoned trains that I took pictures of on day 8, and I remembered the bridge that overlooked the rail-roads. I decided to go back to take a few snaps.

I know I said I'd go back with my D-SLR at some point, but I only went on a whim, so I had to use my trusty Canon S90. It's not the most amazing shot, but I consider it practise for when I go back on a nice summers day with my kit. Today was far too cold for a late May day!

Discussing the weather has become a running thread in my posts. It's a peculiarly British trait, but I suppose it's noteworthy when you want to go outside to shoot. The weather has a big impact on the types of shots you want to take; the natural lighting can significantly change how you compose your photos, it can influence your choice of subject matter, and it can even determine whether or not you leave the house!

this looks great in b&w!

I love it when people take the time to write a caption :) Thank you so much for sharing...I love reading what goes on through your mind! :D

Also, I must say choosing black and white for this photo was the perfect choice! it really adds to what would have already been a wonderful photo with great lines and textures. Love this along with the quote :)

oh yes, one more thing =) I wanted to thank you for your commments:

"I didn't realise you were so young; judging by your photos, I'd think you were taking snaps for years! It proves that some people just have an 'eye' for a good picture. You're very pretty, and this is a great shot. Thanks for following me, I'm new to this!"

(and there was another one where you said I "trully have an eye" or something like that...)

but really...THANK YOU. what you said means SO much. You are very welcome for the follow... you really do have some super cool shots!! I LOVE the apple splash one. in fact I added it to one of my favs :) and you know how you were saying that you didnt realize I was so young and how it looks like I've been "taking snaps for years"??? well for you...being "new to this"...I'd say YOU too have a GREAT eye!! I really mean that. and look, you only have 11 photos :) that's pretty amazingggg.

also you look very young to me too! maybe not as young as me...but you look like you are in your 20s...you could really makes something of yourself in photography if you ever chose to do so.

I use a Canon Rebel XT ...and I either use a 15-88mm lens or a 75-300mm zoom lens...(the only two lenses I have at the moment lol)

In my "goodmorning sunshine" picture I am using the smaller lens.

I'm hoping if I save enough money though that I can get a MACRO lens!! I want one soo bad :D

oooh you DO have an awesome camera! Its no wonder you get such clear images :)

oh and I do use the zoom quite a bit..probably half and half really!! well, maybe that's not 100% accurate...but I do know I'm constantly changing lenses :P

Although I can see why you say I probably dont use the zoom lens often because my last few shots have been close-ups (which, obviously, I am a huge fan of)...have you seen my squirrel shots? of Charlie? unfortunately Charlie died a few weeks ago :( I was so upset because she (yes she ;P if you go back and read the captions under my "charlie week" you will see why its a girl squirrel named Charlie...) was like a pet to me...she was out there eating the corn I set out every day when I came home from school...I'd always go out and take pictures of her and she let me get SOO close...the closest I ever got to her was 3 inches...WITH a zoom lens so at that point I all I was getting was blurry photos haha but I did get a million cute, fat, happy, closeups of that swee tlittle thing :)

anyways, sorry to go on and on about random stuff that pops into my mind...I get a little carried away sometimes ;)

Love the textures and the lines! Awesome shot!

I love this...the B&W, the detail, the perspective!
Great shot!

PS...I just love that you said, "Bless" to Lauren!
Such an English expression!
My daughter is currently living in the UK, and we've all noticed that she's picked up that expression, and uses it quite often.
SO, you reminded me of that! :-)

Love this shot, saw your post too, I'm following you now, hope you can do the same. I also try my best to give feedback whenever possible, as this is what I am most interested in getting out of my project.

Beautiful photo. Your commentary is a perfect pairing with the black and white photo. I tend to think of Mark Twain stories in black and white instead of color.

What an interesting commentary. Ah...the good old British railway. You have made it look like the old days. Brilliant shot. Only just 'found' you...:-)

Now I've looked at your calendar and found out where Ruddington is...look forward to following you..:-)

beautiful shot. i've always find lines and patterns interesting and you have those in this photo. great contast, too. thanks for the comment on my photos. i sense that you really know what you're doing when it comes to photography and editing, especially with the hdr thing. unlike me who pretty much just takes a picture of everything i find lovely and maybe edit it a little here and there to make it appealing.

also, i love that you take the time to write what's on your mind. you've made this site into an instrument where you can share not only yoru photographs, but your thoughts as well.

Gorgeous shot!! I love the B&W and the perspective! Also, really enjoyed reading your caption! I never knew that Mark Twain hated the railroad, but the quote does fit right for the highways/motorways today. In 2007 we took a long cross-state drive from Saint Louis to the Grand Canyon, and although we passed many states from the highway it all looked the same. It's the little off-roads that lead to some spectacular places, if you have the time to follow them.

I really love your album and i am glad I stumbled upon your photos! Will be following you from now on! :-)

Great photo of the train tracks and the black and white, too. California has lots of trains and tracks and I love taking photos of them.
