Shot at Dawn

This monument at the National Memorial Arboretum commemorates the 376 servicemen executed by firing squad for desertion during the First World War. The statue is of 17 year old Pt Herbert Burden who lied about his age to enlist. Each wooden stake represents one of the 376 servicemen. They were all later posthumously and unconditionally pardoned.
