Over the years visitors have placed thousands of padlocks on the bridge, which has made it a tourist attraction in its own right. However, the Council is going to remove the locks in order to do maintenance work and was going to melt them down, causing an outcry. I have just read that one of the nearby stately homes has offered to relocate them.
