I've had these tucked away since I bought them several years ago. It seems to me, poignant that they leave families and filter out into the world. At the time, I wanted collage materials, but I found them too sentimental to alter in any way. A handwritten letter, sent through the mail is a rare thing these days. Even now they're an oddity to enjoy and perhaps even more so in time.
Love this pic! I am a big fan of ephemera (paper collectibles) and love old letters, too. I fully understand what you mean about altering these precious memories. So we'll just take pics of them instead, right?
I never thougt of it...but handwritten letters are not something that you see these days. I used to have so many pen pals and just loved coming home to get the mail. Technology has really changed this. I just never realize what my students are missing out on. Great capture for a picture as well....!
Thanks everyone; I'm glad you all enjoy the beauty of old correspondence like I do.
Veronica: I did exchange "Mail Art" with a number of people in recent years, and THAT was such fun because you never knew what to expect in the mail. It's always a pleasure to be surrounded by talented people who enjoy sharing and honing their art...as now, with our photography!
I didn't know you could buy someone else's letters. How bizarre! Love the idea and the nostalgia for the written, more intimate form of communication which just jumps out at you.
Handwritten letters. A time remembered but pretty much gone. I love old books and journals that are written in the forms of letters. This picture speaks. I love it. Thank you for visiting my blog, and for your nice comments on my barn photo. I use a combination of several different editing programs; often use all of them on one photo. On this one, I used Nik Color Efex 3, Topaz Detail, Topaz Adjust, and LucisArt. There are websites on each of those programs. You should be able to Google them. But if you can't find them, let me know and I'll send you links. Some of them are pricey; but they're fairly easy to learn. On this photo, I also used two textures and blended them into the image. Thanks for asking.
oh, i love this. it's sad that "letters" are almost a thing of the past. unfortunate, because they are so much more meaningful than emails and virtual communication. in one class i took we talked about "social others" and the professor asked us to think about how many more people we have in our lives because we can "email" or "text" or "facebook" or "instant message" them in contrast with how many people we care enough about to actually go visit them in person or write them a letter. i think about it all the time, and still cherish the letters i write to the people i love and the ones i receive because it means so much more. i just love this photo because it really illustrates that beauty.
Beautiful picture!
