With reports of pending rain, we seized the good weather to take some side trips from Milan. Our first day in town, on a sunny day, we took an hour-long train ride to the town of Como at the southern edge of the lake in northernmost Italy. We took a boat tour to the little town of Bellagio, and, along the waym saw some of the most gorgeous villas, towns and vistas! Of late, George Clooney has put this place on the map, and a member of the boat’s crew pointed out his home, though, already, Billy knew where it was. He and David had stayed here for a month in the recent past and were a wealth of information about places we passed. More beautiful than the gorgeous man-made structures were the imposing snow-capped mountains, and once again, no single photo can capture the breadth of the scenery! We had a brief visit to the little town of Bellagio where stone-covered steps climbed the hillside. We spent a short while at the top before coming back to the water’s edge, stopped for a coffee and enjoyed the view. As the sun now sets early, and surrounded by such high mountains, many little towns we passed by boat were already deep in the shade. We talked about what it would be like to live in such a place in the shadow of a mountain. Then again, some villages on the opposite side of the lake were bathed in the golden glow of afternoon sun. It was a beautiful day and a pleasing trip. I hadn’t expected the lake to be so big and to see so many towns and villages rimming it. It was fun to have entered with few expectations and to have received such a visual reward!
Amazing sight..nice to have your own personal guide along on your trip. all of you enjoying your fabulous touring. keep them coming I might not comment on everyone but see them all.
You captured this so beautifully, Louise!! It truly is incredible scenery...one of our FAVORITE places in Italy. We stayed in Varenna on Lake Como. I am really enjoying reliving my vacation to Italy through your camera lens....thank you...thank you...thank you....
Wow that is just gorgeous. I love how the buildings give perspective on just how big the mountains are. One thing I miss from moving to the midwest is we have no mountains here!
Wow, wow, WOW! Just look at those mountains! What a fantastic shot and it sounds so romantic. I just love reading what the four have been up to everyday. Keep the travelogue coming!
This scene is quite amazing, and the beauty of the mountains, it takes your breath away. I can only imagine how it is being there in person looking at the majestic mountainside. Absolutely stunning.
Oh WOW! I love the perpective of the giant mountains compared to what I'm sure is already a large lakeside structure. I'm definitely enjoying your vacation from afar!
so many good memories looking at your great pictures Louise (I may have said it before sorry...). We used to stay in a "pensione" in Lenno, a nice simple hotel with a fabulous view and have a short stay in Milan too, very closed to the Duomo! Hopefully we'll be able to go back in 2011...
What an incredible view!! There's so many beautiful places in the world, and we are lucky to be able to see some through your photos, Louise! Now I really want to go on a trip to Italy!
