Now that the sun isn't coming up so early, we went out to see if there might be a pretty sunrise. There were bands of clouds for color, and it was lovely, but it was the light striking the trees behind me that I thought might possibly make a good black and white image. This challenge to work in B&W doesn't come easily to me, but I'm finding new approaches that might even help my learning curve, so thanks Anita for challenging me to give this a go!
For Anita @aglennc , this photo was taken at the now-empty campground on Blockhouse Hill where she and John were staying when we first met them in Lunenburg.
@ceilidh Louise and Margaret, I hadn't ever created a B&W until I joined 365 and the Feb B&W month intrigued me. I now feel free to use it or not depending on the mood and composition I have.
The nearly-stark branches contrast wonderfully against the moody sky in this B&W finish. I like how the house in the distance is catching the light and nearly glowing.
@lyndemc I love it when you stop to comment! Thank you! You always pick up on the subtleties I saw when I took the photo :) It was quite cold that morning (said by a California girl, anyway...), my hands were freezing, but I was waiting for the windows to catch the light... so thanks Denise! ...and a good way to start my day is to see what you've been posting! (I am SO far behind... ..I know...cry.me.a.river... haha!)
@aglennc wanted to share this location...and lucky you to have visited the charming quiet of this site as well as the Norwegian cathedral you've posted!
Beautiful choice of b/w! I am guessing from your description that Canada has daylight savings time too? Ours doesn't change until this coming Sunday. As has been mentioned by the others, you caught the light at the perfect time as it accentuates the texture of the tree bark and the shadows gives more shape to the trees. Very nicely done Louise! Fav!
@skipt07 Thank you Skip for taking the time to give this a thoughtful analysis! I'd forgotten all about Daylight Savings...I would imagine most of us change at the same time (though I don't know where you live.) I'm glad I got the sunrise when I did...I'm typically not an early riser (as I stay up far-too-late on 365!) I guess I can go out for the sunsets before dinner...an upside to everything!
@Weezilou - I live in northwestern Pennsylvania. I am not certain if we live in the same time zone or if you are in the one just before ours. In 2007 our Congress decided to extend the length of DST for energy conservation. Before that DST was from first Sunday in April and the last Sunday in October. Now it is from the first Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November.
@skipt07 We're just one more time zone over. (and it's always interesting to know where people are taking those lovely photos!) We're from So Calif, so we notice a difference in the length of the days when we return home in the winter. And Ken says our time change here is Sunday also...
@summerfield I was willing to give it a go for 5 days...and I'm glad I did! I learned a lot and that B&W has more than gray-tone possibilities. I do loe colour a lot, however, and would have a hard time eliminating it from my palette... Will be curious to see how you handle it as I know you will do so creatively!
@Weezilou - i've done it in 2013 and sort of choked by the end. http://365project.org/summerfield/365-again/2013-02
but of course i'm thinking it should be a different time now that i am more conscious and selective of what i shoot. i'm planning on combining it with the use of my 50mm lens. or maybe not. hehehe! you are so sweet!
@Weezilou It's neat to know you were actually waiting for the light to hit those windows. You put so much thought into your photos, and it shows. I believe California hands know cold just as well as midwestern ones. It was 36 here this morning and my fingers were downright chilly while out tending the llamas. Funny, they didn't feel that cold when it was -11 and there were frozen bubbles to be made!
@lyndemc What a great comment! ... Amazing how the mind can be distracted when there's concentration at work! I did find here that you can get cute little gloves in every color for only 89 cents (!!!) at Walmart! (Does ANYTHING sell for 89 cents anymore, and how can they make them for that!?) Now...I just have to remember to take them along! (I'd be totally distracted from the cold if I had the chance to feed llamas! I'd love your life!
i'm planning on doing b/w for november, but i'm not sure if i can pull off 30 posts in black and white.
