Our neighbors for over 40 years, Barbara & Loren, took us to lunch today at a favorite restaurant of theirs, and did we have an excellent meal! While everyone was going the corned-beef & Reuben sandwich route, I spotted the "rare-and-nearly-extinct" "Monte Cristo Sandwich" and had to indulge myself...it didn't disappoint! We enjoyed an animated visit and still have a few more days left for get togethers. Before leaving, we stepped into the bakery...and OMG... Making a choice was painful, but I took lots of photos for the memory and picked a slice of chocolate & cream roll cake coated with dark chocolate to take home for dessert tonight.
Let me put it this way... It was a cake slice that merited a vintage china plate and a sterling fork... A glass of champagne would have been a nice touch, but I had a warm and homey cup of coffee.
I only ate half the cream cake...
I saved the rest for tomorrow and maybe *then* I'll remember to take a photo of it!
(In my chocolate-induced reverie-turned-stupor I seem to have *forgotten* 365... whoops...)
Louise, this just came to mind and I think it sums up all that I know about you and the things and people that you care about. "You live life", not everyone knows how or tries to do that. But you do. "You Live Life"
@thirdjoe Well, Joe, *shame on me if I don't*! I haven't come through life bruise-free (both literally and figuratively) but I've learned we're foolish not relish the blessings we're given everyday. Don't mean to go all philosophical on you when you've handed me such a beautiful compliment, but let's say, I'll always try to earn it. Thanks, dear friend ♥
Sounds like a wonderfully indulgent time was had by all!
Nice group portrait to mark the day - one to look back on that will be guaranteed to raise a smile, I think.
I'm a Reuben girl through and through. I'm sure your Monte Cristo sandwich was delish, but I wouldn't pass up a Reuben for a pot of gold. ☺ That chocolate cream roll cake sounds like a winner too!
@timandelke Only the two days before I was discussing that sandwich with my friend, Mary! It's one of those "1950s" sandwiches...popular "back when" and probably now deemed too high in fats and calories! AND, she and I commented we only see them in "most high-end restaurants"...where they now "bake" them so as to make them healthier! (They were never meant to be healthy!!) So there I was and found it on the deli menu...bread stuffed with turkey, ham and Swiss cheese, batter dipped and deep fried... AND served with a size of fruit preserves! Personally I think one should be allowed to indulge at least once a decade! (I could only eat less than half, so I'll gently reheat it for lunch today...) ummmmm
Sometimes < and in this case > I`m very glad to be one of the many. You`ve so many friends but make all always believe we are very special to you .
Thanks for it and sharing them all.
@pyrrhula Ferry, that's the loveliest and most touching thing anyone might say! I'm most sincere in saying my friends truly ARE very special to me, across the street, two doors down and all around the world! --I'd asked Ken to be in this photo and to let me take the picture, but Barb told me to get in there with them. Since we're supposed to leave in a week, pictures with my friends will be a nice way to save the memories of our last week in town for a while! Thanks, Ferry, and yes, you ARE very special to me...my "Hummingbird Connection" : )
This has been a mouthwateringly good thread to read! Loved all the talk of the sandwich! They actually have these at a "deli" (not a real one) in Charlevoix and I almost ordered one to eat on the ferry on the way to the island. Forced myself to go with something healthier and now am regretting it!
I must find this place! I spent the entire motorcycle adventure in search of a Monte Cristo and never succeeding. Good to see you up and around, Louise!
@stray_shooter We'll bring directions! Valley View to Katella...past race track & a former golf course...well you would probably know where THAT was!...Ken says it was "a small one" with hills... Anyway, we'll have the scoop!
great to know you're getting better. i know i would, too, if we're talking good food. and not to worry, i am famously known to forget about the camera when i am presented with food!
btw, you look tall! how come everyone's tall? :-) i have yet to meet a 365er who's my height or lower.
First, what a great photo and you look sooooooooooooo good!! I'm so glad you got out and had some fun and that cake, well, the chocoholic that I am, would have downed that cake in 1 minute flat!!! How decadent it sounds!! Love your portrait, FAV!
