The wildfires that spread through Colorado, Utah and Idaho last month were certainly no joke, but the smoke made for some stunning sunsets.
This was taken on US Route 20 somewhere between Craters of the Moon National Monument and Mountain Home. A wildfire started in Twin Falls by a lightning strike had by this time expanded to cover 117 square miles, and a smaller fire at Mountain Home had resulted in 22 miles of Interstate being closed.
In the foreground, a centre pivot irrigation system keeps crops watered. The pulsed spray from the sprinkler head at the end can be seen blowing to the left in the wind.
Another one that benefits from being viewed large.

The sun rays are fantastic. I love the way the spray is at the same angle too.
My friend was on fly-drive holiday in Colorado. She said the smoke over the hills was blotting out the sun at one point.
Always hard to comment on these. I live in New Mexico, and fires are far too common. I got some nice shots recently driving through Colorado near Fort Collins, and what can you say? Beautiful shot! (Of smoke from a fire that destroyed lives?) It is a beautiful shot of a such a heart-breaking thing. The angle of the irrigation is very neat and breaks my heart even more, because I just wish some of that would fall from the sky where it's needed. Great picture.
