The Old Merchants Hall is a fascinating and impressive property, and is one of the most striking properties in the village.
It is Grade II listed and parts of the house date back to the mid 16th Century. The property has an intriguing history having been used as the court house during the Monmouth rebellion.
Behind the striking front facade of Tudor half timbering and Jacobean herringbone brick work is a remarkable house, full of character.
The building was once three houses. The front door belonged to the cottage and the low canopied window belonged to the Middle Shop.
The small room to the right of the now closed up oak door was once the village Post Office, which was transferred to the top shop in 1970.
It was renamed after it ceased to be a post office and a shop.
@pasttheirprime Thank you for kind comments-I have always been attracted to this building every time I visit Steeple Ashton and have often wanted to see inside. Best thing so far is I've found sale details on Humberts web page with some inside photos!!! Perhaps one day I'll get inside!
