O is for opals

Opals are my favourite gemstones. This brooch was one of Mum's, bought on a trip to Australia.

PS As an astronomer by training, I have to get this out of my system. Today/tonight there will be a lunar eclipse. The Moon will pass through Earth's shadow - in doing so it will darken and might appear to change colour. It is a lunar eclipse, NOT a blood Moon. The trend of coming up with silly names for events (c.f. 'Super Moon'), instead of using the real terms, is just unnecessary dumbing down. Most people are quite capable of using real names given the chance. If you're taking pretty pictures of the beautiful event, please give them their real name (and note that Moon is a proper name and has its own capital letter too). That concludes this public service broadcast.

Phew. I feel better now :)
Love opals,

Haha, such a beautiful brooch here! A lovely photo! I heard about that lunar eclipse as well! I was planning on getting photo's but sadly it is cloudy and raining. Is it just me or whenever something is going to happen in space meteor showers/ moon events, it always seem to be cloudy! x

Pretty brooch. The eclipse turned red here, and, God help me, my husband wandered into the bedroom at 3 a.m. to wake me up and ask me how to make my DSLR take a picture of it, lol. (He is not a camera guy.) I don't remember what I told him about the camera settings...I know I said, "Go get the damn tripod or it's never going to come out," and then I went back to sleep. I looked this morning to see what he got..all things considered, he didn't do too badly! :) He did, however, call it a blood moon, and I will correct him when he gets up. ;)

A gorgeous brooch, the blue colour is lovely! Very interesting astronomy lesson, I've never heard the term blood Moon before, I prefer just Moon! I must try and see the eclipse, it's clear here at the moment.

Oooh, I'm glad I didn't put Blood Moon on my shot Alia, lol. But I have used Super Moon ;-) Actually, I didn't find it was very red anyway.
Opals are beautiful! Nice shot.

What a lovely "O" shot, Alia! I love the color of the gemstones! And thank you very much on the Moon lesson! I have always used lower case "M" in my descriptions. I will try to remember that the next time I post a Moon shot (so the one I uploaded today doesn't count!). Well done on this. I also like the shiny gold. Very pretty.

Pretty brooch and very sentimental. It's kind of nice that it has an O shape in it too- great for your alphabet.
