Originally, Scott's Addition in Richmond was part of the Mayo family Plantation. Major General Winfield Scott, a hero of the War of 1812 and the Mexican War received the property as a dowry when he married Elizabeth Mayo. Throughout the 19th Century, Broad Street was Richmond's primary turnpike and the railroad was a significant part of the area. At the turn of the 20th Century businesses anxiously moved from downtown to Scotts Addition because of the central transportation center served by streetcars, the railroad, and the highways. Despite an active merchants association, time has not been kind to some of the businesses in this section of town. This moving company is actually still operating from this address, but it has definitely seen better days. You'd think someone would have enough pride to replace the missing letters.
Yes, add the missing letters; get the grass & weeds out of the cracks in the sidewalk; plant a few flowers or shubbery along-side the building and then maybe it wouldn't look like a "sinking ship" to passerbys.
Great pic for the theme.
really nice shot, it really gives me a forboding, decaying feeling when I look at it. Thanks for the history too, and I didn't notice the letter missing until you meantioned it, but it adds to decay, as does the grass in the sidewalk. :)
My husband now tells me he thinks this business has really changed location (The Moving Company has moved.) which makes me feel better and worse at the same time.
Nice capture here, Allison. And glad to hear they might have just relocated yet this is a sturdy looking building...would hope it might be used for a new purpose before it completely falls away to decay.
(And thanks for telling me about my photo making pop page...yo know I rarely think to check that;-)
Oh, how I wish someone would invest the time and resources to bring this back to life! You just don't see corner buildings or real glass-block windows like that anymore. Even buildings that try to look "vintage" tend to not quite make it for some reason.
Dear heavens, I just realized I said "resources" instead of "money." I've been working for the government for too long...going away now to hang my head in shame!
But it's a beautiful photo. The colors have almost an Old West feeling.
Congrats on Top 5, Allison! I missed this shot earlier (I'm having trouble "keeping up" this summer)! I don't know if you edited this shot, but the color really adds to the feel ...
Great pic for the theme.
love the retro look!
