When my mother was growing up in New York City, they called this game "potsy" and the rock you threw was also the potsy. When I was a kid we called it "Hopscotch" and drew the outline on the playground with chalk or used the rough edge of the pebble to draw the figure. Nowadays at school there is a perfectly painted design. And I've never seen anyone playing.
We called it hop-scotch, and I remember playing this a lot with my friends when I was little. Our grid was painted on the asphalt, but it was old, worn and faded. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Awww yes, I remember hop-scotch. My sisters and I played by the hour. We drew our own with chalk and also used the painted on grids. We used chains as markers. The key was getting a "good" chain.
We called it hopscotch too...see this everyday at Michael's school. Never seen anyone playing on it. But across the street from his house is a chalk one that is always busy! Great shot for the theme too!
Hopscotch! Funny, I literally photographed one of these not too long ago, and you are right! I never see anybody play! My friend and I were remembering times when we were younger, and I tried to draw one just last week, so that we could play! Oh man, the days when I could jump around, and not be in pain! LOL Great photo!
Aw! Those kids should be playing hopscotch! Maybe they need someone to teach them. :)
I love the texture of this shot. Very nice! It brings back memories! I used to draw them with chalk and/or a rock!
I've read about potsy in books, but I never made the connection that it was hopscotch. We played, and our kids played, and sometimes we draw one with the sidewalk chalk and teach our grandson to play.
Allison, I took this exact shot way back in the spring ...not sure if I ended up using it or not though...will have to go back and check ;-0 You make a good point though...I have never seen any kids playing it either. I wonder if anyone ever taught the kids how to play it...maybe that's the reason.
Have you ever heard of "stone teacher."It is one of those games you play as a kid that is rather pointless ( yet we played it fairly often when we were about ages 5-7 I guess) requires nothing but a set of stairs, a small stone, and a few kids. I guess today's kids would find it oh, so boring though.
How nice to see something I remember from my childhood, long time ago and in another place of the world. We also draw it on the pavement or the road with chalk. Children play it sometimes her as well nowadays. Here, in Israel it is called Klas, or Class.
What a shame no one plays it anymore! I played this with a friend's four-year-old just three weeks ago. However, after she drew it out on her porch and we jumped through it one time...she was bored and wanted to go back to bouncing on her fancy trampoline (Geesh! Kids today!) Actually, I was kinda glad because I had forgotten how much effort it takes to "jump" in the air. Whew!

We had our own "tors" or stones to throw :D good memories.
