If you follow my colleague Karen @hwy61 You'll know the 2nd grade at our school just presented the culminating program for their study of the United States: http://365project.org/hwy61/365-2011/2011-02-03
This morning, before they performed for their parents, they held a Hat Parade, wending their way through the school corridors and sidewalks. Each student had constructed a hat representing noteworthy aspects of the state of his choice. Here we see members of the class representing the Southeastern region of the United States. This is one activity the kids do at home, and the parents are allowed to help. They have great fun and really create some unique hats. Karen mentioned yesterday that the kids never forget the signature song of their performance. They can also tell you, years later, what state they specifically studied. This is authentic learning that truly engages the students. You can see the enthusiasm shining in their eyes.
Did you see the project Fotofem is doing at her school? http://365project.org/fotofem/365/2011-02-04 I'm so glad our kids are in the hands of teachers who know how to teach in a creative, fun, and memorable way.
@pstcrdldy Teachers nowadays have to compete with a highly entertaining multimedia world. They can't expect kids to sit still and learn from a dry textbook.
Wonderful shot.
