One of Gainesville's most recognizable landmarks is the 1120 foot long 34th Street Graffiti wall that borders the University of Florida Golf Course. Since 1979, this slab of concrete has acted as a canvas on which greetings, lamentations, congratulations and the occasional random graffiti can find a home. The structure was originally built as a retaining wall for the golf course. It has recently been called a "concrete blog" for the city. Although painting on the wall is technically illegal, it has been overlooked for decades.
Note: I realize I do not technically qualify for this week's theme but there is no going back and I thought this wall is certainly a sign of the times.
Here's a video from a few years ago to give you a sense of the length of the wall: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fM85XHpnwg
Allison, this is a great collage, full of contrasting styles of graffiti and vibrant colours. Nice to see people in T-shirts and shorts too, we are still weeks away from wearing those clothes in the UK !!
Cool wall! Better than boring grey anyday! :) Under one of our bridges here there is graffiti art, its changes once a year, I must take some pics of it some day.
