The trend in the United States has always been the bigger the better, but we have a neighborhood shopping center that successfully represents "good things come in small packages"
It was Richmond's first strip shopping center and took hold of the people of Central Virginia very quickly. This group of stores was especially popular due to the "park and shop" nature it had. As more shops developed on the surrounding property, the entire area became bustling with customers and even tourists. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources gives recognition to the Cary Court shopping district for its major influence in Virginia's commercial development in the Twentieth Century.
A few blocks away is one of the city's most beloved institutions, the Byrd Theatre, a restored movie palace that has operated continuously since 1928.
My boyfriend and I drive through this area every other Saturday night (I enjoy riding around this area as well as Shockoe Bottom.) Despite the fact that I go to college outside of Richmond and would always visit Richmond at least twice a month even before college, I've never been to the Byrd Theatre - I am determined to go before summer vacation gets here though!
I love the picture and the history you include, by the way :)
That is especially nice to have. We have a rinky dinky mall or shop center, or sorts - a dozen stores when all space is rented. But it is handy and local and we try to buy there but so often they just don't have the resources to carry everything.
