The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is a popular 1876 novel about a young boy growing up in a small town along the Mississippi River. This scene reminds me of one of the most well-known of Tom's escapades:
"Tom appeared on the sidewalk with a bucket of whitewash and a long-handled brush. He surveyed the fence and all gladness left him, a deep melancholy settled down upon his spirit. Thirty yards of board fence nine feet high. Life to him seemed hollow, and existence but a burden. Sighing, he dipped his brush and passed it along the topmost plank; repeated the operation; did again; compared the insignificant whitewashed streak with the far-reaching continent of unwhitewashed fence, and sat down on a tree-box discouraged."
It's a good picture- but didn't Tom convince his friends that painting the fence was such a phenomenal experience they were all begging for a turn? This fellow apparently didn't read that far in the book.
hhaah brilliant..... @olivetreeann yes I agree, I remember that he persuaded his friends it was the best job ever! Great catch Allison. You better go back and see if he's finished!
Allison, a great picture enhanced by your 'literature text'....I agree with @olivetreeann too, I recall Tom convincing his friends to take over (it's about all I remember from the book though....in fact it may have been a TV series in the UK...Tom Sayer was not on the book lists in English Lit when I was at school !)
