Well here it is. I walked over this morning at 8 AM and then John and I returned at 2 PM to see the final positioning. Here is a description from the museum website:
A team from Dale Chihuly’s Seattle studio is in Richmond this week to install Red Reeds, in VMFA’s 60-foot-long reflecting pond. The internationally renowned artist created 200 red glass reeds as part of this fall’s exhibition, “Chihuly at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts,” opening Oct. 20.
The reeds were blown by team Chihuly in Finland because of the excellent clarity of glass and to take advantage of the bigger annealing ovens used to facilitate the curing of these large-scaled elements, which are as much as 10 feet high.
Water lilies, lotus and grasses will be positioned throughout the installation. Chihuly’s work is frequently informed by nature and the artist has exhibited his work at major botantical gardens and natural settings internationally.
I plan to return once more in the next week after dark to see the installation lit by spotlights.
Wow ... what an exhibition. I had no idea that he did outdoor work like this. I think that this will be stunning at night with the lighting. I've only seen his indoor work like bowls, statues, chandeliers, etc. So interesting to see these.
