Our Lower Schoolers voted for what matters to them. Here were the issues:
K= adopting a Bobcat or Eagle at Maymont
1= favorite Kevin Henkes picture book character between Chrysanthemum and Lily
2= favorite underwater animal between Manatee and Narwhal
3= should we separate boys and girls in the Lower School as we do in Middle School
4= recess before or after lunch?
Voting was all done on iPads.
The procedures were carefully planned:
Six third grade students and at least two parent volunteers assisted with the following jobs:
• Two students (working in pairs) were in charge of registration. They checked off voters in the voter notebooks.
• Two students escorted students to the voting booth
• Two students handed out “I VOTED” stickers after each child voted.
Once the polls close, fourth grade students tabulated the election results and reported via a video sent by email to classrooms.
I remember other elections where young students just aped their parents' political choices which led to hurt feelings. This was so much more civil and kid-friendly.
Very important issues, however I disagree with the whole lesson but I would I am as you would term in your country a neo-liberal? I think that is the term I have read around the world wide web.
@ayearinthelifeof I certainly agree you should not espouse a particular political party which is why our choices were non poltical. However, we need an educated and informed citizenry that understands the significance an election has in a democracy.
