The World Has Changed

Our school is almost 100 years old. For all that time we have had an open campus with parents, students and visitors coming and go unimpeded throughout the day. In the last few years the tragedies of the world have made a deep impression on everyone, and since the horror in Newtown, CT, our administration has increased security in many ways. Starting today, access to buildings has been greatly restricted. It is suggested we carry our keys if we need to use other than the primary door to each building. We will even have a county policeman on campus throughout the day. What a sad commentary on the state of the world in which we live. What is even sadder is that within a few years, our students will have no memory of any other kind of world.
Nice composition but yeah. When I started visiting schools in the eighties, I breezed in and the librarian met me. Now it!s buzz to be admitted, go straight to the office to sign in and receive a visitor's pass. Some schools require a copy of my drivers's license. One even wanted my finger prints. Sad.

Yes, it has changed. I think it will continue to change.

It is a sad commentary. I work at a church shop and am now required to have an escape plan and pepper spray. What a world.

So true. Staff at my school returned today after summer holidays. Our opening reflection was based on that amazing interview with the Grade 1 teacher from Sandy Hook Elementary. We were asked to re-think our role as teachers in the light of her comments. Very moving.

Bad things have happened also here but we have still open doors, so anybody can walk inside schools. We have to believe that nothing bad will happen in future.
It is so sad world in many ways now but also many good happy things fortunately :)
Good, happy day to you !

@lehy your faith is lovely, but unfortunately we owe it to our families to demonstrate that we can keep their children safe. Unfortunately, I don't know if you can really protect against a maniac with a gun.

When you think of how things have changed, it saddens you, but not much more we can do with all that has been happening lately. It seems like every other day something else comes about.

It is sad, isn't it? But I think every generation has faced this in one way or another. I remember my parents commenting on things I faced in high school that they never had to concern themselves with. And then I remember being concerned for my own sons over other issues. But it does seem to be even greater now than it ever was before. Your school has taken the necessary steps and that's good. A bit inconvenient when you're used to more freedom, but worth it in the long run.

Great creative photo illustrating this new procedure. So very sad. You would never expect anything like this to happen when we and even our children were young. Very troubling world we live in.

A beautiful photo, Allison. A sad, sad commentary on so many levels.
