This sinkhole was born about 8 years ago. It started small in the back yard of Sarah's parents' home. Within 24 hours it had grown and deepened into a full-sized pond. They had to bring in many truckloads of cement to pump under the house to stabilize the ground. The rest of the yard is manicured grass, but this geographic oddity is kept in its natural state.
You are hearing more and more about sinkholes, makes you wonder what is shifting underneath us. Our Daughter and her fiancé just bought a house a few months ago, and about two weeks ago a huge sinkhole opened up one block down the street from them. It was that immense that it caused 6 or 7 homes to be condemned. Our Daughter had purchased sinkhole insurance when they bought their home, just in case. The area near them is known for sinkholes, not on their street. Go figure, one opened up.
@digitalrn I think part of the problem is the increase in population means more water removed from the aquifer. Sarah's parents are fortunate the hole hasn't gotten any bigger.
