Winterberry

lex verticillata - the American Winterberry - is prized as an ornamental plant in gardens for the midwinter splash of bright color from densely packed berries, whose visibility is heightened by the loss of foliage; therefore it is popular even where other, evergreen, hollies are also grown.
I went for a photo walk in the school garden at lunchtime. I haven't done that in a long time, and it was fun seeing what was out and about. These berries made a festive display among the dried grasses and bare branches.
Reading your last sentence, that was exactly what I was thinking! They have the beauty of holly berries without the "dangerous" spiked leaves!
