For once the photographer gets photographed. John and I had dinner at The Jefferson, Richmond's 5 star hotel, a wonderful surprise gift from my brother and sister-in-law in Connecticut. September 12 is my birthday, and John's is the day after so we have one grand celebration.
You may wonder about the alligator in the fountain. Here is how Wikipedia explains the significance:
"In his autobiography, The Moon's A Balloon (1972), Academy Award-winning actor David Niven described a trip from New York to Florida in the late 1930s, when he decided to spend the night at the Jefferson Hotel. Niven said that, as he was signing the guest registry in the lobby, his eyes snapped open with amazement when he noticed a full-sized alligator swimming in a small pool located six feet from the reception desk. The alligators at the Jefferson became world famous. Old Pompey, the last alligator living in the marble pools of the Jefferson's Palm Court, survived until 1948. Bronze statues of the alligators now decorate the hotel."
The restaurant in which we dined was named for Etienne Lemaire, Thomas Jefferson's chef while he was president. We actually ate in a lovely intimate, bookshelf-lined room called, believe it or not, The Library!
Now how appropriate is that?!! Happy Birthday and wishing you a wonderful year ahead in which you get to spend lots of time with your family and read many good books!
